From the earliest days of life, babies are active processors, not passive vessels. During their first 18 months, superhighways are paved in baby’s brain – pathways that will last a lifetime. This is why Turbo Babies highlights that learning starts at birth and reading starts at birth.
Reading and book sharing with your baby early and often is key. The roots of your baby’s language are developing in their brain before they can even talk! The more words a baby hears over time, the more words they learn.
Book sharing is different than reading and takes the pressure off story time. Book sharing is a chance to playfully explore pictures, colors, and words with your baby. As your baby flips through pages, points to pictures, and explores the book, you can follow their lead and tune in to what catches their attention.
Birth-6 Months Read chunky board books, soft fabric books, vinyl bath books
6-9 Months Read short, simple stories with colorful illustrations
9-18 months Read stories with rhymes and phrases that repeat, pictures of other babies and familiar objects.
18-24 months Start to read longer stories. Funny and silly stories will help keep your baby engaged.
24-36 months Try books with paper pages and an interesting plot. Include books about animals, vehicles, jobs, and more. These types of books are great to help toddlers begin to figure out how the world works.
Everyday moments like story time help create close connections, support language development, and provide opportunities for babies to learn about new subjects, emotions, and experiences.
